Literature Text

You have lived your life and you have died. You pass foreword and now two paths are before you.

One leads to the gates of Heaven.

It is long, winding and difficult.

The other leads to Hell. It is a short, quick descent.

Then you stand before God.

He asks you about your child.

You are confused. You had no child or no marriage.

Then you see her.

Your beautiful baby daughter that never was.
There is a dim light as God beckons her with the gentle call of His voice.
She is an infant, tiny and helpless.
Then the light grows as she transforms into a toddler.
Her face changes from innocent and pure to sorrowful.
A deep sadness that echoed across the realms of this world, and the next.

Mother.

Why?

Why wasn't I wanted?

You can't speak back to her.

You want to reach out and hold the child.

But you can't.

It's too late.

The little girl changes into a pretty teenager.
You can see the same sadness in her soft brown eyes. Your eyes.

I would have been beautiful, she tells you.
I would have been loved by many.
I would have loved to hear the music that you have heard.
I would have loved to dance like you.

You feel something now, a scream that builds with guilt and remorse.

But you can only watch as the light grows brighter than a star as she transforms into a beautiful woman.

I would have been great, she tells you again.
I would have discovered the cure for cancer.
I would have traveled to Iraq and made peace there.
I would have brought the life and light to the world that you never could.

He words pierce you over, and over and over again.
A pain that you have not felt until now.

Mother.

Mom.

Why?
For the 40 million voices that are lost each year to abortions. Since they can't speak for themselves, we must speak for them.

This one's pretty powerful, too. I admire the way you chose to focus on the "what if" factor of abortion, putting a new spin on the issue that perhaps many people don't usually think about. I also admired your use of the spiritual aspect, as the woman finds herself standing before Judgement. Two great ideas woven into a beautiful argument. I really enjoyed reading this tribute.
